2016 Reviews – Bulgaria – Poli Genova – If Love Was A Crime

Bulgaria is bringing back a crowd favourite this year, Poli Genova, with a song that has quickly become one of the most talked about this year. The song, If Love Was A Crime is a catchy pop song, slightly different to her previous entry of 2011, called Na Inat, which had more of a rock vibe. Could this be a surprise winner?

The song immediately catches your attention, and you immediately know it’s a song that will build, and you will be able to dance to. The first verse sets the tone, and then the pause before ‘they will never bring us down’ brings in the extremely catchy chorus, with a slight hint of national language. Then again, the bridge builds the suspense for the last chorus, which the audiences will already know the words to, because it’s just that easy to pick up on.

Poli is a very capable singer, which we saw back in 2011, then at Junior Eurovision last year, and now again we have seen her energetic personality come through in the Eurovision pre-parties. In 2011, she failed to qualify with Na Inat, which was a complete shock to me back then, as it was final material, but this year, she will be in the final, no doubt. This year, with a catchy, modern, radio friendly pop song, we have the potential to see Bulgaria in the final, and reach a top 10 position.

As for the staging, I have already watched rehearsals, but for the sake of trying to keep some uniformity to my reviews, I’ll just pretend I didn’t see them! I think as long as Poli brings that energy on stage on the night, she will have no problems at all. I think this is a song that will be supported more by the televoters than by juries, but I think overall it can appeal to all audiences.

I think in any other year, this could have been a top 5 performance, but in a year so strong, with so many potential top 10 artists, this could end up middle of the table, or just make top 10. I really enjoy this song, and I know I’m not the only one with that view! I’m going to give this a 9/10.
