Feature Part 1: Learn more about Eurovision Choir of the Year!

A while back, we reported that the EBU had decided to expand the Eurovision family of events by including the Eurovision Choir of the Year. Fast forward a few months, and now we’re only two weeks away from the first ever edition of the competition. As you might know, the competition is to be held in the capital of Latvia, Riga, on the 22nd of July.

To recap on our previous post, the first edition of the competition will be produced by Latvian broadcaster LTV and Riga Tourism Development Bureau (LIVE RIGA). It will be held in the Riga Arena, and will take place within the broader international competition of the European Choir Games, which is operated by Interkultur, a German promoter. At that event, 150 choirs will travel to Riga to participate. Back to the Eurovision Choir of the year, a total of 9 choirs will participate from the collection of EBU Member countries, and they’re all fighting for the first ever title of Eurovision Choir of the Year, which also includes a recording deal for the winning choir. Each choir will perform a six minute unaccompanied set in any musical style, and these sets will be judged by a jury consisting of British composer John Rutter and Latvian mezzo-soprano Elīna Garanča.

Breathing Together Initiative

In accompaniment to the first Eurovision Choir of the Year, Latvian Television has launched a campaign titled Breathing Together. The message behind the campaign is that ‘We live in different places of this planet. We speak different languages. But we breathe the same air.’ The campaign allows anyone from around the world to submit short videos of themselves breathing in and out, hoping to unite people from all walks of life! You can learn more on breathingtogether.eu!

Stay tuned for Part 2 of our Eurovision Choir of the Year feature, where in the next post we will be discussing the participants of the first competition!
